Boost The Immune System And Cut Down On Binge Drinking

A new report based on research from the US has shown that regular binge drinking and alcoholism are responsible for weakening the immune system and putting the body at a higher risk of infection. Experiments conducted during the study on laboratory mice and cells had the results that two serious components of the immune system were totally blocked for 24 hours and sometimes longer after the binge drinking had stopped.

Staff at the University of Mississippi and the University of Louisiana were involved in the study and they confirmed the findings that some cases did not fully recover for more than 24 hours. Colds, flu, fatigue and serious infection are just some of the side effects of having a weakened immune system caused by heavy drinking.

This is because the two components which are affected by heavy drinking are interlinked. The TLR4 protein receptor is responsible for boosting the responses of the immune system to viruses and bacteria that enters it. Our immune system is unable to fight against bacteria and viruses which enter the body when this receptor is blocked after binge drinking. The production of cytokine is retarded whilst there is so much alcohol in the body. The immune system only knows of any infectious bacteria or viruses in the body when it is warned by cytokine.
If the body does not know there is an infection looming because of a lack of cytokine and then it does not have the means to fight off the infection because the TLR4 receptor does not boost the system’s response, our health is at serious risk.

There are many things you can do to boost the immune system. A healthy diet with supplements to make up for any deficiencies teamed with regular exercise will help keep the immune system strong. You will do so much more however if you keep your alcohol intake to a minimum and if you do binge drink every now and then, make sure you look after yourself in the following 24-48 hours.
